SEOUL, Republic of Korea – Rear Admiral Lisa Franchetti, Commander U.S. Naval Forces Korea, kicked off the 8th Annual Korea Women’s Leadership Seminar in Seoul Feb. 20 as the keynote speaker.

This year’s theme was “Happy Home Life & Successful Career: Can We Really Have Both?” and was co-hosted by the U.S. Embassy and Sookmyung Women’s University.

Expressing her hope that her professional accomplishments would inspire both male and female future leaders, Rear Admiral Franchetti discussed her philosophy on leadership and life balance with forty rising women leaders from around the Republic of Korea in the Centennial Memorial Hall.

“Balance in our personal and professional lives will give us the spirit and energy to pursue career goals with passion and enthusiasm, and will make us effective leaders with a strong foundation to stand on,” said Franchetti.

Rear Admiral Franchetti's also advised the professional Korean women from diverse industries and work sectors to define their own meaning of success.

“Because each of us has a definition of what success means to us, our level of satisfaction between the balance between our home life and our work life will be different,” said Franchetti. “In our quest to answer this question, I believe it is always important to recognize that there is no ‘cookie cutter’ approach to this challenge we face.”

Guest speakers from Korean industry and the U.S. Embassy focused on topics including family friendly corporate policies, women’s professional development programs like mentoring, and managing work and life commitments in Korean society. The participants were drawn from civil society nationwide, from more than 20 cities and provinces, including politicians, business women, civil society activists, journalists, educators, agriculture leaders, and artists.

The keynote speech was part of an ongoing outreach initiative at CNFK to strengthen bonds between the U.S. military personnel and citizens from the Republic of Korea.

Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Korea is the regional commander for the U.S. Navy in the Republic of Korea and provides expertise on naval matters to area military commanders, including the Commander for the United Nations Command, the Combined Forces Command, and Commander, U.S. Forces Korea.
