CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Due to the recent destruction of training areas caused by off-road recreational vehicle use aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, base officials are cracking down on illegal mud bogging aboard base and remind off-roaders mudding is forbidden aboard the installation. The effects of off- road vehicles on restricted areas delays training, destroys vegetation and puts Marines and sailors in danger.

“Patrons who enjoy mudding need to realize the areas they destroy from off-roading in their vehicles also can delay or even prevent Marines from training and can put themselves or others in danger,” explained Duane Richardson, the Base Range Safety Specialist at Range Control Division. “This installation is here for Marines to train and prepare for their missions, not for off-road amusement.”

As a result of off-roading in local communities, three roads have been shut down for a period of five years to restore the roads and surrounding vegetation. Georgia Pacific Road, Seaborn Road and Horse Island Road have all been closed due to vandalism and destruction caused by mudding from trucks and all-terrain vehicles.

“There are endangered plants and animals that are affected by people taking their vehicles off-roading in these areas,” said Paul Boniface, Chief Game Warden aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. “When people are caught off-roading illegally in these locations, they have to face the consequences.”

Losing their base driving privileges is not the only consequence off-roaders may face, said Richardson.

All-terrain vehicles including dirt bikes, four-wheelers and side by sides, are forbidden aboard the installation unless authorized under an official capacity and for training purposes only.

“There is no place on this base authorized for off-road recreational vehicles such as 4x4 trucks, Jeeps, dirt bikes and all-terrain vehicles,” said Richardson.

For more information on the rules and regulations concerning off-roading and all-terrain vehicles aboard the installation, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune Order 5090.111 and Base Rage Control Standard Operating Procedure, provides all necessary information.
At the end of the day, we want to take care of our Marines and that is the highest priority, said Richardson.
