BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – Afghan national police, advised by coalition forces, detained a key Taliban leader and six other insurgents in a targeted strike in the vicinity of Sultak Village, Patan District, Paktia province, Aug. 28.
Elements of ANP 14 and Chamkani ANP, acting on credible intelligence, located and detained a mid-level Taliban field commander and facilitator known as Zakir Shah. Shah is known to have transported fighters and supplies between Afghanistan and Pakistan and directing the murders of Afghan non-combatants. Six other suspected insurgents were detained during the operation.
The detainees were taken by ANP for processing. They will be questioned regarding their involvement in insurgent activities before further disposition is determined.
No shots were fired during this operation and there were no ANP, coalition or civilian injuries or deaths reported.
"The Afghan national police in Chamkani have quickly developed into a well-trained and effective force," said Army Capt. Vanessa R. Bowman, a Combined Joint Task Force-82 spokeswoman. "Coalition forces provided only minimal assistance to the ANP during planning and execution of this operation and the ANP performed all of their tasks flawlessly."
