PORT HUENEME, Calif. - The 481st Transportation Company, an U.S. Army Reserve boat unit deploying to Afghanistan, Southwest Asia, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, with a heavy boat replacement crew, conducted a deployment ceremony at the Bee-Hive Wellness Center, Naval Base Ventura County at Port Hueneme, Feb. 8.

The 481st TC is one of two U.S Army Reserve heavy boat companies operating the Landing Craft Utility 2000. This unit was constituted June 22, 1944 as the 60th Transportation Corps Composite Company and activated July 20, 1944 in Australia and served during World War II.

This mobilizing unit consists of approximately 16 soldiers from five states, including California, Washington and Florida. More than 75 percent of the crew has deployed at least once in performing watercraft operations in the Persian Gulf.

“The mission of the 481st TC is to conduct LCU 2000 operations, providing intra-theater lift capabilities in the Persian Gulf in support of retrograde and maintenance efforts of the Operation Enduring Freedom,” said Capt. Jia “Alex” Zhu, 481st TC company commander. “It is important because the watercraft assets provide the additional transportation capabilities in bulk as well as at reduced cost versus airlift.”

The ceremony began with the traditional ceremonial pageantry. The standing unit was summoned to order arms. The audience stood for the presentation of the colors and honors and the unit was brought to present arms, then to parade rest. These displays of uniformity were executed with discipline and precision.

“It has been an enduring requirement for the watercraft presence in this area of operation since the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003,” said Zhu. “We have pushed and retrograded rolling stocks, equipment, and weapons in and out of the theater and to support coalition forces training and mission requirements in theater of operations.”

Three heavy boat detachments have mobilized and deployed from 2003 to 2006. This company was later awarded a meritorious unit citation. In December 2011, the 481st Transportation Company began its mobilization rotations, providing four LCU 2000 vessel crews in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
