JOINT BASE MEYER-HENDERSON HALL, Va. - A dozen Marines and nine soldiers from Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall judged the Third Annual Thomas Jefferson Middle School science fair Jan. 29. The 21 servicemembers volunteered their time as part of the Single Marine and Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers programs.
There were more than 5,000 entries in the science fair representing 100 percent participation from the school’s entire seventh and grade students.
The servicemembers were among some 120-plus judges – all volunteers from surrounding communities – to judge science projects from among 13 different categories, including Animal Sciences, Behavioral/Social Sciences, Cell/Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Engineering, Energy, Environmental Science, Mathematical Sciences, Medicine and Health, Microbiology, Physics, and Plant Sciences.
“It was a great way to learn what the students were doing,” said Jamie Albers, from Henderson Hall’s School Liaison Program. “The volunteers had a wonderful time with interacting with the students, and afterwards we sat and talked about the things we learned from the kids and couldn't believe some of the projects they came up with.”
“I can tell they put a lot of work into their projects,” said Pfc. Tahira Lawrence, an administrative clerk with Henderson Hall’s Headquarters and Service Battalion. “I was very surprised at how sophisticated some of them were.”
The top 20 students and their projects will advance to the Northern Virginia Regional Science Fair. The regional science fair includes top students from middle schools and high schools in Arlington, Alexandria, and Falls Church, Va.
