SASEBO, Japan - More than 100 sailors and Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society volunteers came out to participate and kick off the annual NMCRS active duty fund drive with a "Polar Plunge" at Commander Fleet Activities Sasebo Jan. 24.

The polar plunge began with volunteers passing out pre-plunge hot cocoa and coffee to participants. Logistics Specialist Seaman Melvin Randall said the participants were briefed that the water was 58 degrees and the air temperature outside 39 degrees.

“I have no idea what I got myself into but I’m excited to show my support of NMCRS by taking this polar plunge,” said Randall.

The participants were then called in groups to begin their decent down the ramp and into the water for the plunge. After wading at least waist-deep into the water, the participants were greeted on dry land by NMCRS volunteers with towels and blankets.

“I’m really impressed with how well this event turned out,” said Chief Master-at-Arms (SW) Robert Curtin, the NMCRS active duty fund drive coordinator for CFAS. “We really wanted to do something different this year apart from doing 5Ks or fun runs to kick off this annual fundraiser. I really think that everyone enjoyed this event and it’s hopefully something we can do in the future.”

The event was designed to raise awareness on services that NMCRS provides for sailors, Marines and their families, said Kathryn Dennis, NMCRS Sasebo’s director.

“Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society offers so many programs and assistance to service members, but all of that wouldn’t be possible if we didn’t have the annual active duty fund drive,” she said. “It’s so important to raise awareness about our services and I’m so happy that we were able to do that in a fun way today.”

“It was probably the coldest I have ever been in my entire life,” said Randall. “But I’m so happy to be apart of this great event.”

NMCRS is a private, nonprofit, volunteer and charitable organization whose mission is to provide financial, educational and other assistance to U.S. Navy service members, their eligible family members and survivors when in need. Established in 1904, NMCRS has more than 200 offices on Navy and Marine Corps installations around the world.
