LOS ANGELES – The 311th Expeditionary Sustainment Command conducted a Martin Luther King Jr. remembrance ceremony, hosted by Maj. Sonya Carter, 311th ESC HHC commander, in their West Los Angeles unit drill hall Jan 16.

Martin Luther King Jr. was an American pastor, activist, humanitarian and leader in the Civil Rights Movement. He is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights, using non-violent civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs. He was assassinated in 1968 in Memphis, Tenn.

"I feel that this remembrance ceremony is important because we are celebrating Martin Luther King's life and accomplishments," said Carter. "We are thanking him for having the courage and selflessness to speak out against inequality and injustice regardless of what the ramifications were. I hope that we never forget his ultimate sacrifice."

Dozens of soldiers, civilian employees and retirees filled the drill hall to hear a presentation of his life and accomplishment.

In 1964, King received the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality through nonviolence and was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal. Martin Luther King Jr. Day was established as a U.S. federal holiday in 1986.

King's main legacy was to secure progress on civil rights in the U.S. Just days after his assassination, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1968. This legislation was seen as a tribute to King's struggle in his final years to combat residential discrimination in the U.S.

"When I hear the name Martin Luther King Jr., I immediately think of our Army Values. I feel that his commitment to a nonviolent campaign embodied the core values that we strive to live on a daily basis," said Carter. "These tenets can be practiced at home, in relationships and during the course of employment."

Martin Luther King Day Jr. is a federal holiday held on the third Monday of January.
