RALEIGH, N.C. – The Army National Guard’s Recruiting and Retention Battalion (RRB) constantly looks for ways in which to reach new recruits and to educate and inform the public about the multitude of benefits and programs the National Guard has to offer.

Late last year, Army Lt. Col. Sarah Dicks, NCNG RRB commander, was asked to give a speech as part of the 2013 North Carolina School Counselor Association Fall Conference at the Sheraton Koury Convention Center in Greensboro, N.C.

The ultimate focus of the conference was to foster strong bonds between the NCNG and guidance counselors in public schools across the state in order to facilitate a pathway for recruiters to enter schools and enlighten students about what opportunities the Guard has to offer.

“We have a very vested interest in developing Soldiers and developing leaders that work to serve and live in the same communities as you and I,” Dicks replied.

As actions overseas are dwindling down, the National Guard has fulfilled half of the dual mission needed to support the state and protect our country from foreign enemies. Due to this reality, the new focus is to shift our focus toward the mission here at home by raising awareness to our state’s youth in the classroom in order to show our future generation how ready and relevant the NCNG is in their own community.

In addition to participating in events like the NCSCA Conference, NCNG RRB is also involved in a lot of other programs focused at enriching the knowledge and fostering good values in school-age youth that are directly in line with the culture of the National Guard and the military.

“High Schools are where we meet a lot of our potential applicants, but also where we can get our face out there and let people learn about the Guard and what we’re about,” said Dicks.

One of many major school programs the Guard has implemented into the school system is the “is the HEAR (Helping Everyone Achieve Respect) Anti-Bullying campaign, which is a 50-minute presentation aimed toward reducing and/or eliminating bullying and cruel behaviors.

The presentation was developed in collaboration with nationally renowned subject matter experts at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The presentation has been tailored to meet the specific needs of the National and State Common Core Learning Standards.

“Race 2 Achieve” is another progam that NCNG RRB supports. This program is a free Common Core-aligned supplemental curriculum for 11th- and 12th-grade math classes that focuses on how NASCAR Team, Hendricks Motorsports, utilizes key concepts found in Algebra II and trigonometry, and applies them to real-world scenarios.

Race 2 Achieve has been developed by certified math and science educators in conjunction with Hendricks Motorsports engineers, the team responsible for preparing Dale Earnhardt Juniors’ number 88 National Guard Chevy SS.

Engineering Design and Failure, Guard Fit Challenge, Heritage, Outreach, and the HUMVEE School Program, are a few of the other programs that teachers can request material for and incorporate into their curriculum.

“It’s very important for them to know that we are a part of the community that we are just like them; we are not just Soldiers in the National Guard, we are also teachers, dentists, and so on.” Dicks said enthusiastically toward the end of her speech.
