CAMP LEMONNIER, Djibouti, -- U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Wayne W. Grigsby Jr. took command of Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa from U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Terry Ferrell during a change of command ceremony at Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti, Jan. 14, 2014. U.S. Army Gen. David Rodriguez, U.S. Africa Command commander, presided over the ceremony.

“The task force plays a vital role in deepening military-to-military relationships between the United States, allies, and East African partners, especially by supporting partners as they strengthen their defense capabilities,” Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez stressed teamwork as key to the success of the military mission and said he is proud of the men and women who make up the CJTF-HOA team.

“Maj. Gen. Ferrell passes leadership of this great team to another very capable leader, Brig. Gen. Grigsby,” he said. “I know Gen. Grigsby well and am confident he will lead this task force to even greater success.”

Approximately 100 U.S. and African officials, as well as several hundred members of CJTF-HOA and Camp Lemonnier, attended the morning ceremony.

During his comments, Grigsby pledged to represent the task force in a positive manner and to continue to be a great teammate with all joint, interagency, intergovernmental and international teammates as CJTF-HOA continues the mission and vision here in East Africa.

“Thank you for the very warm welcome, I feel like I’m part of the team already, I just have to live up to it … my initial focus will be first and foremost on building relationships with each and every one of you, based on trust and working together as one team, we, ours and us,” Grigsby said. “We together as one can and will continue to be successful on this very important mission … I look forward to the challenges and successes ahead, forward and together.”

As CJTF-HOA commanding general, Grigsby is responsible for an 18 country, 2.4 million-square-mile combined joint operating area in East Africa.

CJTF-HOA supports partner nation military operations in East Africa to defeat violent extremist organizations, conducts focused military-to-military engagements, and conducts crisis response and personnel recovery in support of U.S. military, diplomatic, and civilian personnel throughout East Africa.
