SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. – This week’s U.S. Army Central Spotlight is Staff Sgt. Christopher R. Gibson, food service specialist, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion. Gibson joined USARCENT in 2011 from a San Antonio Recruiting Battalion.

    Q: What are your hobbies?

A: I love watching and playing sports, dining out and watching movies.

Q: What do you enjoy doing most during your free time?

A: Spending time with my wife, and traveling to new places.

Q: What are your short/long term professional goals?

A: My short-term goals are to further my education and to switch from my current military occupational specialty (MOS) to another MOS, so that I can expand my military knowledge base. My long-term goal is to retire from the service as a sergeant major.

Q: When did you make the decision to become a soldier and why?

A: I made the decision to become a soldier shortly after I left college. My mom was a retired soldier and my father was still serving in the military at the time, so I thought it was a natural fit; the military felt familiar to me because I was living in a military lifestyle on a day to day basis.

Q: If you could take a vacation to a location of your choice, where would you go?

A: I would choose Europe; because there are a lot of other places I could visit close by that I have never been before.

Q: What do you enjoy most about being a soldier?

A: The most enjoyable part of being a soldier is being able to open myself up to people that I probably wouldn’t have associated with if I was not in the military. I really like how diverse the military is.

Q: If you could change one thing about the Army, what would you change and why?

A: I would change the Army as a whole. As we downsize the military to cut numbers, we lose “seasoned soldiers”, but recruiting numbers still remain high. My concern would be saving soldiers jobs. I would not replace skilled soldiers with newer soldiers, who have to be trained to perform at the same skill level of the soldiers that we’re letting go. It cost more for the Army to train new recruits rather than to allow skilled soldiers to continue to do their job.

Q: If you could hold a different position in USARCENT, for one day, what position would you choose?

A: I’m not sure that I would want a different position while at USARCENT, for the simple fact, I meet and work with everyone, here, in USARCENT. My current position allows me to help soldiers in a way that helps their careers and I enjoy that.
