FORT STEWART, Ga. -- “Dr. King paid the ultimate price for freedom and justice for his generation and those who would follow him -- freedom has never been free.”

This is just a small excerpt of the speech which was given by Robert Earl James, a native of Hattiesburg, Miss., president of the Carver State Bank of Savannah, Ga., who served as the keynote speaker for the 3rd Infantry Division’s Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Observance, hosted by the 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, and the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, here at Club Stewart, Jan. 8.

Attendance was so high that people had to stand, as they gathered to pay respects and remember the man, what he did and what he stood for.

The theme of the observance was “Remember! Celebrate! Act! A Day On -- Not a Day Off”.

After James’ speech, Sanchez Waller, vice president of the Student Government Association at the Savannah State University, recited with verve and fervor an excerpt from one of MLK Jr.’s speeches entitled “The Birth of a New Age”.

James’ message for the day was a good one.

“Dr. King’s dream was one of freedom, equality, justice, economic parity, and brotherly love,” James said. “Each of us should do our part to help our communities, nation and the world to achieve Dr. King’s Dream.”
