JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. - Soldiers and family members crowded into the newly named Col. Darron Wright conference room Dec. 27, to dedicate it in memory of the former 7th Infantry Division operations officer.

More than 200 soldiers, family and friends attended the ceremony honoring Wright, who died Sept. 23 while conducting “a standard MC-6 parachute jump at Sicily Drop Zone,” according to a statement from Fort Bragg, N.C.

Wright, who died at age 45, was honored with a speech by the 7th Infantry Division Commanding General, Maj. Gen. Stephen R. Lanza.

“It’s a special day for the 7th ID, and for the family of Col. Darron Wright,” said Lanza. “Darron was a presence and today we commemorate his life and celebrate his achievements.”

Wright, of Mesquite, Texas, had an active duty career that was interwoven with service in the 7th Infantry Division. During his 26-year career, he served at all three stateside locations where the 7th ID “Bayonet” flag has flown: Fort Ord; Fort Carson; and Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

The dedication ceremony gave Darron’s friends and family members their first look at the bronze plaque on the door to the conference room with the words, " May we never forget those past and present who answered the call to defend us and provide the blanket of freedom we sleep under every night.”
