Coast Guard, good Samaritan rescue man after boat capsizes near Camp LeJeune, NC

EMERALD ISLE, N.C. - The Coast Guard and a good Samaritan rescued a 39-year-old man Wednesday after his boat capsized at the entrance to Bear Inlet near Camp LeJeune, N.C.

North Carolina Marine Patrol personnel contacted Coast Guard Sector North Carolina Command Center watchstanders at approximately 1 p.m. reporting a 16-foot boat was taking on water with one person aboard.

Sector watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and dispatched a crew aboard a 24-foot Special Purpose Craft - Shallow Water from Coast Guard Station Emerald Isle, N.C., to assist. Crews from Bear Creek Volunteer Fire Department, North Carolina Marine Patrol and TowBoat U.S. also responded.

A good Samaritan arrived on scene and removed the man from the water. The Coast Guard crew met the good Samaritan, transferred the man onto their boat and took him to the station, where he was met by an awaiting ambulance crew.

There are no reports of injuries, and Tow Boat U.S. and North Carolina Marine Patrol salvaged the boat.
