    Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti

DJIBOUTI – The Chief of the Navy Reserve visited deployed sailors at America’s only enduring military base on the continent of Africa.

Vice Adm. Robin Braun visited Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti, Dec. 19-20 as part of four country visit to deployed Navy Reservists in the Middle East.

While at Camp Lemonnier, Braun met with sailors from all pay grades discussing deployment issues, the mobilization process and the future of the Navy Reserve.

“Every Monday, the chief of naval operations holds his department head meetings,” Braun said. “We always discuss the important work being done in Djibouti. Not a week goes by when we do not talk about your mission here and plans for the future of this base.”

Camp Lemonnier supports tenant commands engaged in a full spectrum of operations across Africa, the Middle East and the Indian Ocean. Navy Reservists are engaged in all aspects of running the camp as well as operations within its principle tenant, Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa headquarters.

Over 60 percent of the camp staff’s 289 sailors are Reservists serving in billets across all military occupational communities, including the camp’s senior enlisted leaders and commanding and executive officers. Approximately 35 percent of CJTF-HOA’s headquarters staff is manned by Reserve sailors.

Braun is conducting her tour over the holiday season, and in addition to attending mission briefs with the camp and its tenant commands was also able to attend the camp’s Christmas tree lighting ceremony and a concert by Tennessee based trio “Mockingbird Sun” at club 11 Degrees North.

“I was here once before, in 2008,” said Braun. “It’s very impressive to see how much the camp has grown and developed because of your hard work.”

Camp Lemonnier is a U.S. Navy forward operating site operated by Commander, Navy Region Europe, Africa and Southwest Asia via U.S. Naval Forces Africa and Commander, Navy Installations Command.
