ALBANY, N.Y. – Marine Private First Class Noah J. McKnight is being hailed for his role in helping stop a shoplifter at Colonie Center Mall Dec. 19.

McKnight, a native of Cohoes, N.Y., is currently serving as a recruiter’s assistant with Marine Corps Recruiting Station Albany. While on duty inside the shopping center, he heard the security alarm of a nearby store and made eye contact with a suspicious looking man attempting to leave without notice. McKnight, who was dressed in uniform, said, “As soon as he saw me, I don’t know if he was nervous or scared but, you could tell by his face that he knew he was in trouble.”

A local police report reads the man hurriedly left the area and McKnight pursued him, eventually grabbing the bag the man was carrying. The man continued to evade McKnight, who called 911 and continued following until police arrived and arrested the man under suspicion of stealing more than $700 dollars of merchandise.

The arresting officer, Sgt. George Thomaides of the Colonie Police Department, said McKnight exemplifies everything the Marine Corps is all about. “It’s refreshing to see such a conscientious and outstanding young man, like him, who is willing to stand up and do the right thing,” said Thomaides. “He really handed this to us with a bow on it.”

McKnight credits his Marine Corps training for his actions. “This time last year, I would have let it go. I would have been too scared,” he said. “At boot camp, I learned to do the right thing and have more self-confidence.”

McKnight is a 2013 graduate of Cohoes High School, and former MVP and captain of the track team there. He graduated from Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., Sept. 20. He will soon travel to Camp Johnson, N.C., where he will attend training to become a motor transportation mechanic. After all of his initial training, McKnight will be assigned to his first duty station on the East Coast, West Coast, or overseas.

McKnight was recruited by Sgt. Brent E. Nolan, a recruiter with Recruiting Station Albany, N.Y.
