MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - A wastewater spill was discovered at approximately 8:00 a.m. yesterday in which an estimated 9,900 gallons spilled into a storm water pond located next to the Tarawa Terrace residential area at the intersection of Tarawa Boulevard and Peleliu Drive.

An estimated volume of approximately 3,150 gallons of wastewater overflowed from the pond through a discharge pipe and entered a tributary that feeds into Northeast Creek.

The spill was attributed to a sewer line which was blocked by debris and grease emanating from residential homes and overflowed out of a manhole and into the adjacent storm water pond. Personnel from the Public Works Division cleared the blocked sewer line early yesterday afternoon, and efforts are underway to pump out residual wastewater from the storm water pond and disinfect the surrounding area.

Water samples have been taken by the base and North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the base; results are pending. Base officials have confirmed the sewage spill poses no impact to the residential water supply.

This notice is required by North Carolina General Statutes Article 21 Chapter 143.215.C.
