YONGSAN GARRISON, Republic of Korea – A group of local kids and teens showcased their artwork at the annual Boys and Girls Club of America Fine Arts Exhibition at the R&R Bar and Grill, Dec. 12.

Paul Stuart, deputy commander of U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan, presided over the event to recognize the young artists and encouraged them to continue reaching further for their dreams in their future. Stuart also emphasized the meaning of recognizing the creativity of local youngsters.

"It is truly a pleasure for me to be here," Stuart said. "The Boys and Girls Clubs of America have some of the most dedicated children. I'm especially impressed with their creativity they have demonstrated. Speaking of creativity, we must all know that these young people who have gathered here today are the ones who will lead our community in the future. We must help them develop that creativity."

The artists, from kindergarten to 12th grade, competed in 10 different categories and in four age groups. First and second place of each category were awarded with a medal, certificate and a prize.

This year’s local competition was also meaningful because it is the first time for Yongsan children to earn first and second places in all but one category.

Jordan Tulic, a senior of Seoul American High School, had his name called the most, winning in three different categories.

He appreciated the garrison for organizing an award ceremony, and thanked his school teacher and family for their support.

"I wouldn’t have been able to get these prizes without the help of my teacher and parents," Tulic said. "As a student wanting to major in art, I feel really good to be awarded tonight."

The winners from the Yongsan local competition will advance to the regional competition, scheduled for February at the Dragon Hill Lodge.
