YONGSAN GARRISON, Republic of Korea – A group of volunteers nominated for their contributions to the Area II community were recognized during the Volunteer of the Quarter ceremony at Yongsan Army Community Services, Dec. 13.

The VOQ event recognizes a person who exemplifies what volunteering is all about, and others who have given their time to support the community’s needs.

“We cannot operate the garrison without the support of you volunteers. This amazing group of people willingly donated their time and effort for the wellbeing of Yongsan,” said Paul Stuart, deputy commander of U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan. “We certainly appreciate the work that you did for us in a variety of fields. I hope that you gained from the efforts you’ve put forward, broadened your experience and met some new people.”

The garrison recognized 20 volunteers: James Adkins, Randy Batarao, Tracy Dougherty, Eunice Garcia, Karen Grenier, Calvin Gross, Patricia Hammond, Jae Sook Jeong, Ivanhoe Kim, Myung soon kim, James Mancillas, Stacey Meyer, Cathleen Mojica, Alfred Penn, Kevin Shanahan, Kenneth smith, Pam Smith, Wendy Teague, Mary Thomason, Kenyetta Whitesides and Natalie Won. According to Area II Volunteer Coordinator Zeny Bate, the total value of the 3,000 hours of the volunteers’ work this quarter equals a savings of more than $75,000.

All the volunteers’ efforts were noteworthy, but Mary Thomason stood out from the rest this quarter and was names Volunteer of the Quarter. Thomason volunteered as the “Sonlight Camp” director, creating, planning and organizing weekly activities for participating children. According to her nomination package she made a significant impact in the Hannam Village community.

“I can’t believe that I’m receiving this award. I want to say that I’ve put even more time and effort than the other nominees, but I know that it isn’t true. All the volunteers rightfully deserve to receive this,” Thomason said. “I want to express my dearest thanks to the ones who recognized the work that I’ve put in, and not just me. The downside of volunteering is that many people might not know about the work you’ve done for them. But now we all have something to help us realize that the community appreciates the efforts we’ve made, and I’m truly grateful for that.”
