VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - More than 30 noncommissioned officers and junior Marines with Marine Corps Security Cooperation Group attended a week-long professional military education program to enhance their leadership and reawaken their esprit de corps.

During a recent address through ‘The Reawakening’ letter to the NCOs, Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James F. Amos called upon the NCOs to continue ‘Corps faithful and honorable legacy. In his letter, he applauded the everyday efforts of the Marines and requested for everyone to continue the battle through presence, professionalism and tenacity to turn the tide of the fight on adversity within the ‘Corps ranks.

“This week has been very important because we touch base with what it means to be a Marine,” said Col. Matt Baker, commanding officer of MCSCG in his remarks to the participants. He stressed the importance of the training to make sure Marines continue to sharpen their skills.

The program provides progressive educational opportunities to advance Marines’ leadership, critical thinking capability and improving tactical skills. It also positively contributes to unit strength in warfighting capabilities.

This training gauges Marines’ proficiency on personal and professional level, as well as establishes unit camaraderie, said Sgt. Maj. Carl Gantt, sergeant major of MCSCG. The NCOs presence during this training gives junior Marines an example to emulate and follow, as well as establish a one-on-one experience with corporals and sergeants, building better knowledge and gaining confidence as they advance through the ranks.

The PME encompassed close order drill, high-intensity tactical training and a tour of significant historical locations. Marines also received classes on leadership, education opportunities, customs and courtesies, and personal finance.

“I really benefitted from the general knowledge of education and financial management classes; all the Marines can get great value from those classes,” said Sgt. Stacy O. Campbell, a training NCO for MCSCG. “The PME was a good refresher for Marine basics; I enjoyed close order drill and sword manual.”

One of the last events consisted of a land navigation refresher course and practical application. Marines paired up in groups of two and put their skills to the test, plotting their grid coordinates to locate their objectives.

“It is nice to get out and train among your peers,” said Cpl. Joshua T. Crawford, a force deployment clerk at MCSCG and a native of St. Charles, Mo. “It was a good learning environment to be in. I have gained great confidence in leading Marines.”
