CHERRY POINT, N.C. - Members of Cherry Point’s Hancock Yacht Club met to re-launch and re-dedicate the organization’s clubhouse Nov. 7, after nearly 50 years of continuous use.

Over the years, due to normal use and exposure to the elements, the clubhouse has endured some wear and tear. The organization completed renovations to the clubhouse Thursday in an effort to keep the building functional for group meetings.

The Hancock Yacht Club brings together Cherry Point boating enthusiasts, promoting boating knowledge and safety while promoting activities on the sea.

Newton Collyar, the commodore of the Hancock Yacht Club, leads the volunteer force within the organization. Collyar, along with members of the yacht club and other Cherry Point residents, spent more than five years renovating the clubhouse.

The members began renovations by removing carpet and moving the bar to the opposite end of the building several years ago, said Collyar. “Members sanded the floors and applied sealer and now we have beautiful hardwood floors.”

Volunteers contributed countless hours of work to restore the old building, from restroom improvements and rewiring to repairs of damaged paneling and structure repair, he said.

Collyar, who began his fifth nonconsecutive term as the Club’s commodore Oct. 5, saw the beginning of the renovation and has stuck around to see the finished product.

“Everyone came together and worked to make something that was nearly unusable into a fully functional [facility], and it shows in the final product,” said Collyar. “We’ve extended the life expectancy for the building, hopefully, for another 15 years.”

Founded in 1956, the Hancock Yacht Club is the oldest club on Cherry Point. Ted Goetz, an active member since its founding and the club’s historian, recalled the growth of the club since its founding.

Goetz remembers when the original building was occupied in 1942. At the time there were only squadrons on the base but no airplanes. He said the clubhouse was a recreational building in the 1920s.

With the renovation of the clubhouse, members hope to bring in new members from Cherry Point community to share their boating enthusiasm. The facelift provides the organization with time to grow and branch out to more residents of Cherry Point, according to Goetz.

Today’s members and those who have served in the past are dedicated and committed elders who have watched the Hancock Yacht Club bloom into what it is today, said Collyar.

With the renovations complete, the club is looking forward to adding more members and increasing the awareness of boating knowledge and safety within the community.
