QUANTICO, Va. - Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Jason Cooper, religious program specialist, was selected in October as the Headquarters Marine Corps National Capitol Region Senior Sailor of the Quarter for the 4th Quarter of fiscal year 2013. The award is scheduled to be given at a future date.

Cooper, an almost six-year veteran of the Navy, competed against other E-6s in the national region for the competitive award.

“Each quarter leaders recommend sailors, who have gone above and beyond what they’re required to do to compete against other sailors in the region,” said Cooper. “They look at the 360-degrees of the individual. [They want to see] he’s not just doing his job, but what is he doing beyond that.”

The Kenner, La. native shared his drive for award consideration.

“I mostly did this for my chief,” said Cooper. “He’s a man I respect highly. Although he said he wanted to do this for me, I did it for him. I also wanted to bring back something to the religious program specialists here at Quantico.”

Chief Petty Officer Andrew Duprey, Cooper’s mentor, had many positive things to say about Cooper.

“His determination and dedication is why he was considered, and his grit and knowledge pushed him past his competition,” said Duprey. “Cooper has strong moral and ethical convictions. He is highly intelligent and one of the most committed sailors I have ever seen.”

Cooper, whose primary mission is to assist both the Headquarters and Service Battalion chaplain and Marine Corps Combat Development Command chaplain, also leads the group of RPs that service the base.

Cooper will go on to compete in the sailor of the year award in November.

“This is not a reflection of me,” said Cooper. “I am only one part of the machine. Many of my achievements are shared. I think it’s just taking that and carrying on.”
