Brig. Gen. Robert F. Castellvi, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune commanding general, talks with parents, students and school employees about school-related issues during a town hall meeting at the Lejeune High School auditorium, Thursday. Dr. Harriet Hunter-Boykin, Camp Lejeune Dependents Schools assistant superintendent, and Dr. Aldridge A. Boone, CLDS superintendent, were also on-hand to answer questions about the schools.

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - A town hall meeting for parents, students and school employees was held at the Lejeune High School auditorium, Oct. 3.

Brig. Gen. Robert F. Castellvi, the Marine Corps Installations East and Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune commanding general, Aldridge A. Boone, Camp Lejeune Dependents Schools superintendent, and Harriet Hunter-Boykin, CLDS assistant superintendent, addressed topics involving students and school programs aboard Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station New River.

Castellvi kicked off the discussion with opening remarks regarding current events affecting the base, including construction projects and the government shutdown. He also discussed how the installations will continue to support service members and their families.

“From the very beginning of my command, I threw in schools as a significant aspect of our community,” Castellvi said. “I told the school liaison for my command that I will not be a spectator with the education of our children. I want to be involved and help the students excel in all that they do. We all have to work as a team to do this. I have a vision of state-of-the-art schools aboard a state-of-art base with the best education students can get.”

A presentation detailing various school programs, tests and community plans was given.

The presentation also included details about different grade levels and subjects students didn’t perform well in and how the schools will increase the level of education to surpass the Department of Defense Education Activity’s standards.

Boone also covered dress code, safety and security for students, rumors about redistricting, teacher training and school administrators.

“What keeps me up at night and the thing I’m paranoid about is the safety of (the students),” Boone said. “As a basic philosophy, when you send them to us, we need to send them back to you in the same shape. If you ever stand in front of Brewster Middle School or Johnson Primary School and you watch the children ride their bikes across the street, it really makes you cringe. The students ride their bikes across the roads instead of walking them safely.”

He added, “Thankfully, the community members pay attention when driving by the schools and keep their eyes open for students.”

Boone asked parents to lead by example when utilizing crosswalks during and after school hours. He also does not plan to introduce a uniform dress code.
