CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait - Although the 138th Theater Gateway has been operating on Camp Arifjan since June, the official ribbon cutting ceremony celebrated the new home of reception operations Oct. 1.

Maj. Gen. Kurt J. Stein, commanding general of the 1st Sustainment Command (Theater), and Brig. Gen. Donald B. Tatum, commander of the 135th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, were present to cut the ribbon and thank all of those involved for their hard work.

Tatum, the keynote speaker, noted the biggest force behind the move to Camp Arifjan was monetary.

“As stewards of our tax payer dollars we always have to look for ways to make improvements and to make our Army more streamlined and efficient,” said Tatum. “As we looked out at the gateway operations we looked at it as an opportunity to save money.”

Tatum said moving the gateway saves approximately $2 million a month and has already saved almost $20 million.

Lt. Col. Christopher Pfaff, director of the 138th Theater Gateway personnel accountability team, said the gateway processes approximately 6500 soldiers, Department of the Army civilians and contractors each month and is always looking for ways to be more efficient.

“We continually look at the number of people doing the mission and make sure we have the adequate number,” said Pfaff. “We don’t want to have anyone at the gateway who isn’t gainfully employed, and we don’t.”

Pfaff said as the drawdown in Afghanistan continues, the gateway will continue to evolve in their operations and staffing while providing the best possible service to transitioning individuals.
