KABUL INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, Afghanistan – Representing the culmination of months of joint collaboration, Maj. Gen. Abdul Wahab Wardak, Afghan Air Force commander, Maj. Gen. Kenneth Wilsbach, 9th Air and Space Expeditionary Task Force commander, and Brig. Gen. John Michel, NATO Air Training Command-Afghanistan commanding general, signed the newly created Flying Hours and Mission Essential Tasks operating instructions, Sept. 10.

The new OI’s set the flying standards for the AAF, and enable all wings to follow the same guidelines across the board.

"We want to build up our young pilots and our language training," Wahab said.

"It’s easy to work hard for this because we are all passionate about it," Michel stated.

Both men agree that there will be a lot of work in the future, but implementing these documents will set the groundwork needed for a more cohesive air force.

“Training is very important to the AAF,” Wahab said. “We just started it a couple of years ago, and we need to build up the wings like Kabul.”

Michel echoed the need for consistency within the AAF and between all the wings.

“Kabul is further ahead and can be a model others will follow,” he said. “If we work and plan together, we can measure the progress week by week.

These guidelines for development of unit level training plans prepare AAF soldiers for mission success and sustainment and provide a document to validate progression.

“If we work shoulder to shoulder, we will experience great improvement,” Wahab said.
