    Story by Sgt. Anthony Kirby

    III Marine Expeditionary Force

MIYAGI, Japan - It has been a unique tradition for the commanding officer of the 3rd Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment, to show respect by visiting with mayors of Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, whose residents live near the live-fire artillery training site at the Ojojihara Maneuver Area, and that tradition was continued Aug. 30.

Lt. Col. Jason Brown, the commanding officer of 3rd Bn., 12th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, visited with the mayors of the three municipalities surrounding OMA prior to the start of Artillery Relocation Training Program 13-2.

Brown made it clear to the mayors that safe training lays the foundation for success on the battlefield, and that his Marines make safe training their top priority.

The Marines of Battery C, 3rd Bn., 12th Marines, worked countless hours to perfect their craft and hone their skills as artillerymen to ensure readiness, according to Brown.

“I’m fully confident that while we’re here at Ojojihara we’ll be able to conduct our training in a safe way. Safety is my number one focus.”

Throughout the day, Brown spoke with Mayor Hajimu Asano of Taiwa Town, Mayor Masahiro Atobe of Ohira Village and Mayor Takuya Ito of Shikama Town.

It is important to have these meetings as a courtesy to the municipalities hosting the Marines. The meetings demonstrate the Marines’ respect for the community and care they have for the people living near the OMA.

The Marines’ genuine care garners support from the mayors and community, according to Brown. That support is appreciated during the live-fire portion of ARTP, and reciprocated during the community relation events. This relationship is important to the battalion and the alliance between the U.S. and Japan.

The Marines participating in ARTP 13-2 are with Battery C, 1st Battalion, 12th Marines, currently assigned to 3rd Bn., 12th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, III MEF, under the unit deployment program.
