3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Eighty-five soldiers volunteered their time to help high school students from across Colorado during this year’s Cheyenne Mountain Stampede Cross-Country Race at the Norris Penrose Event Center in Colorado Springs, Aug. 26.

Soldiers and leaders from Company C, 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, were on hand to provide a helping hand with everything from parking, directing runners on the course, passing out water at the finish line, crowd control on the course, and assisting with course maintenance and safety.

The annual race, hosted by Cheyenne Mountain High School
Kris Roberts, athletic director at Cheyenne Mountain High School, said almost 5,000 students participated in this year’s race and a large number of volunteers are a must.

“This is the fourth time we have hosted this race, and it has been a struggle the previous three times,” Roberts said. “It is better for us having the soldiers help out, because it is easier for us to manage the course. We can’t pull this off without that kind of support.”

The races started at 11:30 a.m., with the last race of the day starting at 7 p.m. Soldiers were posted around the course from beginning to end, assisting race organizers and runners.

“We are appreciative of Fort Carson and the group of soldiers who came out to support us,” Roberts said. “It’s a great event for the kids, and to see this kind of support is amazing.”

Sgt. Andrew Burd, combat engineer team leader, Company C, 3rd BSTB, said that helping with the race was a great opportunity to give back to the community.

“We want to help out any way we can, and it’s always good to show that the Army is more than just a combat force,” Burd said. “We are humanitarians as well, and we want to help out our communities.”

Burd said his motivation volunteering comes from past experiences.

“I have been helped by other people in the past and this is a way for me to give back, to help others like people helped me,” Burd said. “Plus, it’s great to be able to come out here and show these kids we are here for them.”
