RALEIGH, N.C. – The North Carolina National Guard's Education and Employment Center held a two-day Job Readiness Workshop and Hiring Event at NCNG Headquarters, here Sept. 4 – 5, 2013.

Local human resources (HR) professionals trained 51 participants on job search and interview skills Sept. 4. The next day, local employers held job interviews and screening sessions with soldiers, airmen, eligible family members or veterans pre-registered with the Education and Employment Center (EEC) office. Thirteen participants earned job offers on the spot.

“It felt good (to get a job offer) I can support my family now,” said Army 1st Lt. William Smith, a NCNG leader with Headquarters, 113th Sustainment Brigade.

The job search skills workshop included a panel discussion with HR professionals from Lab Corp, Northwestern Mutual, Duke Energy, Eaton and Lowe’s.

“We were excited to be involved, a huge part of being an asset in the community is meeting everyone,” said Celeste Chapman, a recruiter for Northwestern Mutual.

Each manager at the workshop shared their experiences sorting through hundreds of resumes and what it took to be selected for interview.

“We (the EEC staff) talk with employers and ask them what do you want our soldiers to wear, what type of resume do you want them to have,” said Army Sgt. 1st Class Austin Walther, EEC noncommissioned officer in charge.

Thursday's individual job screenings and interviews with local employers ran from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in 30-minute blocks for 44 participants. Local employers included Northwestern Mutual, Baker Roofing, Kelly Services, FedEx and Duke University and Allied Barton.

“One on one (interviews) is the best,” said Sandy Moonert, N.C. program director for Enable America, one of the workshop organizers.

Out of the 51 service members who attended the first day, 38 participated in one on one interviews. Out of those 38, 13 jobs were offered to prospective job seekers and one soldier accepted a position with a flooring company.

Results like these ensure that the EEC is an effective tool for coordinating with businesses and finding North Carolina National Guardsmen jobs. As finding a job for most is extremely difficult, the EEC is valuable resource for NCNG members.

The effort is part of the NCNG's ongoing efforts to support our soldiers, airmen and families employment opportunities in the civilian sector. The EEC located at NCNG Headquarters in Raleigh is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays.

“We will do anything; we have Bank of America’s veteran outreach manager’s personal phone number,” said Walther.

Similar employment events are scheduled to occur quarterly.
