MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, N.C. - Searching for a job after separating from the military, or looking for one while a spouse is serving, can be a daunting task.

To help with the job hunt, Marine Corps Community Services is hosting a career fair at the Officers Club aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sept. 5.

The career fair will connect those who attend with approximately 30 employers who are located in Jacksonville, N.C. and surrounding areas, said Dana Cozzens, MCCS career resource manager. She added that several of these potential employers have job opportunities around the nation.

“We are excited about the variety of employers that will be at the fair,” said Cozzens.

Hirers from companies ranging from medical and sales to food industry and aviation maintenance are expected to attend the event.

Cozzens said she recommends bringing several items to the fair.
The first is a resume to give to employers as a job-seeker applies for the opening. Cozzens said each individual resume should be tailored to fit the employer and the job opening.
Researching the company helps determine what exactly it wants in its employees and also arms applicants with information that can prove useful during an interview, Cozzens said.

Appropriate attire must also be brought to the fair. Depending on the type of job, that can range from dress casual to a business suit.

“Dressing for success is the best way to go,” said Cozzens. “First impressions are everything.”

She also added that MCCS offers different classes on topics about dressing professionally, writing resumes and interviewing techniques. Those interested in attending can view the event calendar at the MCCS New River website.

The event will have a professional atmosphere. It is recommended parents should plan for childcare instead of bringing children to the fair.

According to the Department of Veteran’s Affairs, the veteran unemployment rate is on a gradual downturn. With the career fair, separating air station Marines can join the trend.
