    Story by Pfc. Cayce Nevers

    II Marine Expeditionary Force

CHERRY POINT, N.C. - Cpl. Carlos A. Mejia is a Marine who keeps his hands and mind constantly busy. When he decided he wanted to join the Marine Corps, he knew being a mechanic on an aircraft was the job he needed and wanted to do.

As a fixed-wing aircraft airframe mechanic with Marine Attack Squadron 231, Mejia inspects and maintains the structure systems of the AV-8B Harrier.

“In airframe mechanics, we fix a majority of the jet,” he said. “We do sheet metal work; we work on composites; we work on the landing gear and hydraulic systems.”

As the noncommissioned officer in charge of his section, Mejia has the responsibility of leading and setting an example for many of the Marines throughout his work section.

He said he is personally responsible for the accountability of gear and personnel alike.

Mejia believes that working together and maintaining communication has built a high level of cohesion within his unit.

“It is good to see new guys come in and to take them under our wing,” he said. “We train them and see them progress throughout the year. We do an outstanding job with the numerous amount of people we have in the squadron as a whole. It makes us more united as a squadron.”
