SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. – The chapel held a free event, called Shawsome Mega Sunday, here, Aug. 25.
“It was a celebration of the community, and it gave people an opportunity to connect,” said Chaplain (Maj.) Matthew Boarts, 20th Fighter Wing deputy wing chaplain. “There is plenty of bad news in the world and we wanted to share something good.”
Approximately 2,000 people came out to enjoy the celebration and the sunny weather.
The event was completely free and was open to anyone who had access to the base including Department of Defense employees, retirees, contractors, and military members and their families. It was funded with the chapel’s tithes and offerings fund which were the offerings given during Sunday Protestant and Catholic worship.
“It was successful beyond my wildest dreams,” Boarts said. “The participation was overwhelming.”
The crowd of people had the opportunity to enjoy multiple activities and attractions at the event. Visitors were able to get their face painted or have balloon creations made by two clowns, and there was a petting zoo, pony rides and five bouncy castles for the kids.
People were also able to enjoy a demonstration from 20th Security Forces Squadron’s military working dog unit and live music by the band Here and Now. The 20th Civil Engineer Squadron also supported the event; Sparky the fire dog and Pluggie the fire hydrant came out and were accompanied by Shaw firemen.
“I liked the variety and the food was really good,” said Jackie Robertson, a military spouse. “I am glad I went. I had a really good time and my children enjoyed themselves.”
“My favorite part was getting the (balloon) animals,” added Katelyn, Jackie’s daughter.
Not only were there hot dogs and burgers, but also snow cones and funnel cakes in addition to a watermelon eating contest. Other games that people had the opportunity to play included a water balloon throwing contest and a scavenger hunt.
Approximately 150 volunteers supported the event including Boy Scout Troop 342 who kept the area clean during the event.
“The help from volunteers and the partner organizations like the 20th Force Support Squadron, 20th SFS and 20th CES was amazing,” Boarts said. “The number of people who came together to build something wonderful (was great).”
