TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. - They walk into the school holding their child’s hand. Some are leading their kids into a new year of school. Others are leading kids to a place where they will learn but more importantly, somewhere that isn’t inside their home.
The start of a new school year can leave a melancholy feeling for parents. Summer vacation is over and their children are returning to school. This means their children will not only be learning new things and making friends, but that the parents have an opportunity for some peace and quiet at home.
Some parents are excited for their children to be learning again and their children are looking forward to seeing their friends after a long break. The transition to the next grade or a new school can be tough. Parents should help their kids meet these challenges.
“We had a great summer, but it’s exciting for him to have his friends back, said Veronica Nissel. “I started making my son worksheets about a month before summer ends just so he gets a refresher before school starts. I don’t like him slacking in the summer.”
Being an involved parent can help a lot in a child’s education and being excited helps make the child excited about school, according to Nissel.
“I’m excited for my son to go back to school,” said Sgt. Lee Bartholomew, military working dog handler. “He’s been looking forward to it all summer. He’s excited, so we’re excited for him. There isn’t going to be a big transition for me, but my wife is going to have more time to spend with our other two children.”
Parents have a lot to look forward to with the arrival of a new school year and there are many ways to get involved. Kids are back in school and parents can help them. Condor Elementary School’s Parent-Teacher Organization is always looking for volunteers and they organize events for students and parents. The PTO is here to help parents with information regarding the school and provides a way for parents to stay active in their child’s education.
“Truthfully, I’m happy they’re back in school,” said Brianna Chandler, president, Condor Elementary School PTO. “It’s been a long summer and they were ready to get back. (My son) doesn’t do well without structure, but he’s happy to be back. I’m happy to be back and the teachers are happy to be back.”
Chandler is a parent of two Condor Elementary students. She urges parents to stay active in their children’s schooling especially in the early stages.
“From a PTO and a parent perspective, we try to have events every two to three months,” Chandler said. “We’ve got spirit nights, movie nights and a book fair coming up. We try to keep the families involved, keep the volunteering up and keep everyone happy.”
