CHINHAE, South Korea – U.S. 7th Fleet flagship USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19) departed Chinhae after a three-day port visit Aug. 26.
Blue Ridge port visits serve as an opportunity to build upon existing relationships with the host nation. Crew members and embarked 7th Fleet staff enjoyed the city’s culture and history while also participating in community service events.
“We visit orphanages, hospitals and schools in foreign countries to interact with the locals, and we form a strong bond with that community,” said Lt. j.g. Jan Ingram. “As the flagship for 7th Fleet, it’s very important to promote a strong and trusting relationship with our Korean friends.”
Volunteers visited Jae-Hwal-Won Children’s Home to interact with the children and share some new games.
“The children were so enthusiastic and happy to see us,” said Ingram. “They taught us a few Korean games and we taught them a few of our own like ‘duck-duck-goose’.”
Chief petty officers and the 2014 chief petty officer selectees stopped by Chinhae Hope Home to spend time with the children. Participants brought crafts for the children to use and showcased some of their talents on stage.
“After watching a very touching film about U.S. involvement in the Korean War, the children put on a musical and dance show for us,” said Chief (select) Personnel Specialist Kerri Scranton. “We repaid them by singing ‘Anchors Aweigh’ and showing them some yo-yo tricks.”
Blue Ridge has been forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan for 34 years. As the flagship for U.S. 7th Fleet, Blue Ridge is vital in forging partnerships in the 7th Fleet area of operations.
