MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. – More than 300 service members and their family members attended the 2013 National Day Out: Back to School Event, which replaced National Night Out, aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico on Aug. 16, 2013, at the Lincoln Military Housing Family Center on base.

National Night Out 2013 aboard MCB Quantico, which was scheduled for Aug. 6, was cancelled due to budget constraints, said Maj. Justin Powell, provost marshal, Marine Corps Base Quantico. By hosting a smaller National Day Out event the Quantico community was still able to interact with their police officers, he added.

The event is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anticrime programs, strengthen police-community partnerships and send a message to criminals, letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back, according to the Stafford County Sheriff’s website, www.staffordsheriff.com.

To reach this goal, the Provost Marshal's Office, Marine Corps Community Services and Lincoln Military Housing co-sponsored the event and provided booths to teach members of the Quantico community about services available.

During the event there was a K-9 demonstration, fire truck display, Naval Criminal Investigative Services display and Special Reaction Team display.

“[The K-9 display is] always the main event,” said Powell. During the display multiple canines displayed their obedience skills and one showed how not only can they subdue a suspect, but also lead a suspect from location to another if necessary, potentially reducing the risk to their handler.

There were also display tables at the event covering the many programs available to those on MCB Quantico including, but not limited to: the School Liaisons; Women, Infants and Children; Family Advocacy Program; Voluntary Education Center; Semper Fit; Marine Corps Family Team Building programs; Lincoln Military Housing; Families Overcoming Under Stress; Marine and Family Programs; Family Child Care; library; and Personal Professional Development.

At the SRT table officers showed children “everything we use, minus one or two things, while teaching weapons safety,” said Bradley Montoya, officer, SRT, Provost Marshal’s Office. “We’re showing the community there is more to Security Battalion than pulling people over.”

The Family Child Care table offered children four years old and older the chance to use their safety knowledge to win a prize.
“We’re learning they know a lot about safety,” said Glenda Mason, FCC director. Safety topics included: bicycle, swimming and kitchen safety. “I’m real impressed with the turnout.”

That sentiment was seconded by the Quantico Fire and Emergency Services captain who was at the event with the fire trucks.

“There are a lot more people than I thought there would be at this time of day,” said Gary Lewis.

McGruff, the crime prevention dog, and Darren, the Drug Abuse Resistance Education lion, were also in attendance rubbing elbows with the Quantico children.

Various organizations also donated school supplies that were handed out to those who attended, including: crayons, watercolor paint sets, composition notebooks, coloring books, construction paper and board games.
