    II Marine Expeditionary Force

CHERRY POINT, N.C. - The Sound of Freedom Golf Course hosted the Sergeants Major Golf Tournament Friday at the Sound of Freedom Golf Course aboard the air station.

The golf tournament gave participants a chance to build camaraderie and to meet the air station sergeant major, Sgt. Maj. Benjamin L. Pangborn, and 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing sergeant major, Sgt. Maj. Christopher G. Robinson.

The inaugural tournament took place in 1997 and has been returned annually for 17 years.

“This golf tournament is a time-honored tradition here on Cherry Point,” said Robinson. “Once a year, the senior enlisted community hosts the tournament for anyone who wants to come out and build some camaraderie.”

About 120 people played, some traveling hundreds of miles to compete.

“We come down every year to vacation and we’ve been participating in this tournament for three years,” said Darla J. Smay, who traveled from Pennsylvania to team up with her brother Randy L. Ramsey, a retired sergeant major. “This is great for us, and we love being around the Marines.”

Participants were split up into a four-player super ball format where every player hits from the tee and selects the best shot from there. Smay said her team, which included her husband, father and brother, was ready to make this a family effort.

“We’re going to have a good time,” said Ramsey. “We’ve got the golf clubs shined up and we are ready to roll.”

Robinson said he looks at the tournament as more of a reunion.
“It’s a huge reunion because there are many Marines out here that I haven’t seen for years,” he said. “This is a great opportunity to have a reunion with folks you have served with in the past.”

Rey Clifton, David Clifton, John Nyberg and Shane Powell, all former Marines, took the whole tournament with a team score of 59. The win earned them gift certificates to the golf course’s pro shop.
