COLUMBIA, S.C. - Firefighters from the 264-268th Engineer Battalions, South Carolina Army National Guard (SCARNG), practiced rope rescue training at Victory Tower on Fort Jackson, S.C., Aug. 3.
Spc. John Cottrell said, “We are practicing rope rigging systems for high-angle and low-angle rescues.”
The day started with the firefighters working on the ground, going over the rope knots and the system of pulleys, locking systems and cables they were going to use in order to raise and lower the rescuer and the victim.
Sgt. Thomas Lindsey, lead firefighter, showed the soldiers safety features on the equipment that made the task of raising and lowering the load easier.
“The rigging system is a way to protect the people being rescued and the rescuers,” Lindsey said.
Many of the firefighters in the SCARNG are employed by fire departments throughout South Carolina. They bring their training from local fire departments to their drill weekends to train the less-experienced firefighters.
“We have to stay proficient in our job at all times. We always have more to improve on so we will continue to train and keep everyone up to date on their much-needed skills,” said Staff Sgt. Andrew Centella, unit training noncommissioned officer. “Our ultimate goal is to become part of the S.C. Task Force 1, (SC-TF1) Urban Search and Rescue Task Force, which will let us provide additional trained firefighters to rescue citizen’s in the state South Carolina when they need us.”
S.C. Task Force 1 is an urban search and rescue task force sponsored by the S.C. Firefighter Mobilization Committee and is part of the State Emergency Operations Plan. SC-TF1 provides training and guidance to the SCARNG firefighters.
