FORWARD OPERATING BASE APACHE, Afghanistan - Looking for patterns of life while escorting U.S. soldiers to an Afghan base is just one of the tasks Sgt. Dillon Diener performs during his missions at Forward Operating Base Apache in Zabul province, Afghanistan.
As a squad leader for a security team in 3rd Platoon, C Company, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, Diener is essential to his team’s success inside and outside the base.
From Mount Pleasant, Iowa, Diener has two sons, Brendon and Landon, with his wife, Jackie. He is going on his fifth year as an active duty soldier. Diener also re-enlisted in front of his platoon Aug. 4. Having young soldiers deploy with him is what keeps him going, Diener said.
“The most rewarding thing as a non-commissioned officer is to have a soldier right out of basic deploy with you and watching them grow and progress,” said Diener. “It’s a direct reflection of your leadership.”
