MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - Approximately 120 single Marines and Sailors completed in the annual Union Park Dragon Boat Races in New Bern July 27.

The Single Marine Program brought Marines stationed at Cherry Point together for a single cause for a second year in a row.
“Marines and Sailors from many different units and squadrons came together to participate in the event and supported our community,” Jennifer L. Krivohlavy, the Single Marine Program Coordinator.

The race was held as a way to raise awareness to keep the Neuse River clean.

“Everyone came from all over to help keep the Neuse River clean. To raise awareness about keeping habitats intact and the importance of keeping the environment clean,” said Krivohlavy.

Team Warrior Owls 2, comprised of Marines from the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training, placed 1st and rowed their way to victory dominating two other teams to walk away with the winning oar. They said they enjoyed every stroke of the 350-meter race.

“The race was fun,” said Derek J. Howell, an AV-8B Harrier power plant mechanic with the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training. “It was challenging but we all pulled together to make it to the finish line. “

During the event, the SMP Marines enjoyed food, drinks and most of all, motivation and support throughout the event from local sponsors.

“We love giving back to the Marines. They do so much for us, and we just want to show our appreciation,” said Paul J. Johnson a race volunteer.
