QUANTICO, Va. - With a sharp “click,” Lance Cpl. Henry Howard secured a bayonet to his rifle. Clad in freshly-pressed dress blue uniforms, Henry and the other members of the Silent Drill Platoon were preparing for their next performance.

Henry looked across a crowd of over 900 people at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle on July 11, 2013, as he and the other 23 disciplined marchers of the group mentally reviewed their moves and received a final word from their staff non-commissioned officer.

“We are here at the National Museum, let’s do this for our Corps,” said Staff Sgt. Scott Wilkey, platoon sergeant for the United States Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon. “Let’s give them a good show.”

Henry and the other Marines stationed at “the oldest post of the Corps,” Marine Barracks Washington, D.C., visited the museum as part of the Battle Color Detachment; a group comprised of the Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon, the U.S. Marine Drum and Bugle Corps and the Marine Corps Color Guard. The Battle Color Detachment was invited to perform as part of a third annual summer concert series hosted by the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation.

“We host these types of events to attract more people to the museum and to be part of the fabric of the community,” said Gwenn Adams, public affairs chief, National Museum of the Marine Corps. “We wanted to give something to the community more than free admission to the museum.”

Applause ushered the team off the field as the sounds of the U.S. Drum and Bugle Corps, also known as the Commandant’s Own, filled the arena. Spectators stood with tear filled eyes as the national anthem and “God Bless the USA” was played. The Drum and Bugle Corps continued with various selections as couples danced.

“It’s not about us,” said Staff Sgt. Nathan Morris, percussion music head, U .S. Marine Drum and Bugle Corps. “It’s about the Marine Corps as a whole. We try our best to paint the best image of our Marine Corps. I think we, the Battle Color Detachment as a whole, do our best to represent what every Marine is about.”

Henry stood with his platoon, straight and professional waiting to meet audience members and take pictures with children.
