    70th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment

NEOSHO, Mo. – The 70th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment, out of Jefferson City, completed its Reserve Component Utilization training at Camp Crowder this past week, ending the two week session in preparation for their upcoming deployment to Afghanistan.

During the duration of their training, soldiers trained on individual movement techniques during combat, combat life saving and first aid, qualifying with both an M4 Assault Rifle and M9 Pistol, and reacting and handling improvised explosive devices.

When the soldiers were not in the field training, they received classroom instruction, which involved briefings on subjects including the Uniform Code of Military Justice, Equal Opportunity within the U.S. Army, and cultural awareness of Afghanistan.

Maj. Frank Analla, the detachment’s commander said he was pleased with the training.

“I am very proud of my soldiers; it was great to see the unit come together and become more and more cohesive as time goes on,” said Analla. “I couldn’t be more proud to take these soldiers into combat.”

Analla praised about the level of training, as well as the instruction given by the cadre in order to adequately prepare his soldiers.

“I feel the level of instruction provided by the cadre was very realistic and effective, considering the current environment in Afghanistan,” said Analla, who currently resides in Bristow, Va. “It will only better enhance our abilities as soldiers and public affairs professionals.”

Towards the end of training, the 70th embedded with the 1138th Military Police Company, out of Springfield and West Plains, while they were taking part in their two week annual training exercise.

The mission allowed the 70th to train on individual job skills while soldiers from the 1138th conducted missions that are similar to those currently being done in Afghanistan.

Soldiers got to witness room clearing exercises, setting up security and convoy operations, as well as handling IEDs at a larger convoy and company level.

Fulton native Cpl. Harold Flynn, a broadcast journalist with the 70th said he was grateful for the unique opportunity to work with the 1138th.

“I was really glad that we got this opportunity to train with MPs because that is something we will be seeing quite often during our deployment,” said Flynn. “They were really helpful and explained what was going on in each situation which broadened our knowledge and helped us understand different missions that will be taking place.”

The joint exercise also allowed soldiers from the 1138th to see how other units such as the 70th MPAD can embed within their own company - something that often takes place during deployments.

Sgt. First Class Robert Lee, a West Plains native who serves as the full time readiness noncommissioned officer for the 1138th as well as the third platoon sergeant, talked about the uniqueness of the exercise and how well the training went.

“Today provided our soldiers with a chance to work with embedded media like the MPAD, and that kind of thing happens overseas all the time,” said Lee. “We saw some things today that we can definitely work on, but overall I was very pleased with the missions we conducted.”

Now that the 70th has completed training in Missouri, the unit will head to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst to finish preparing for their upcoming deployment.

Their commander is ready for the next step, and believes his soldiers are ready for their upcoming mission.

“It’s going to be a challenging, but rewarding mission; we are going to be able to participate in history, as the drawdown in Afghanistan comes to a close, as well as the elections that will take place in the spring,” said Analla. “It will be a wonderful experience, both for the Missouri National Guard, and the United States Army.”
