CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - A group of hospital corpsmen with 1st Dental Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group, took first place in the Corpsman Cup Challenge aboard Camp Pendleton, Calif., June 14, 2013.

The challenge, which was designed to strengthen a unit’s ability to work as a team, was held to commemorate the Hospital Corps’ 115th birthday.

“It was a great opportunity to compete with my fellow corpsmen,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Michael Conley, a hospital corpsman with 1st Dental Bn. “I have a lot of pride in being a corpsman.”

The Corpsman Cup Challenge is a new addition to the birthday celebration and is meant to give sailors a deeper understanding of what it means to be a hospital corpsman.

The battalion’s slogan is “First in service and finest in performance.” The sailors exemplified their motto by competing and taking first place.

“I was very humbled when I found out we won,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Albert Vu, a hospital corpsman with 1st Dental Bn. “We have our pride, but you always want to keep it humble. No matter how big or how small your part is on the team, it’s all about the guy to your left and your right.”

During the course, each team performed a 75-meter low crawl to the beach, 10 tire-flip repetitions and a timed M-4 carbine assembly challenge. Finally, they ran an obstacle course and using a medical evacuation carry technique, carried each other over various obstacles.

Approximately eight teams from 1st Marine Division, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing and 1st Dental Bn. competed in the challenge.

“The fact that you are representing the battalion and finished before all of the other groups was a very satisfying feeling,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Erik Bryar, a hospital corpsman with 1st Dental Bn.

The day’s events not only celebrated the proud history of hospital corpsmen, but also honored the corpsmen who have given their lives to save others. For sailors who participated in the Corpsman Cup Challenge, it’s about the pride of the title “Corpsman.”

“I feel privileged to have gone through it, representing my fellow corpsmen as well as the battalion,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Justin Redus, a hospital corpsman with 1st Dental Bn. “It was an amazing feeling.”
