MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. - The permanent personnel of The Basic School conducted a 10-mile conditioning hike aboard the west-side of Marine Corps Base Quantico on June 28, 2013.
“Two-hundred and thirty-two Marines embarked on the 10-mile hike that lasted three hours and forty-three minutes,” said. Capt. Peter Hackett, outgoing future operational officer, The Basic School.
The hike was held as part of The Basic School’s regimental physical training that is conducted the last Friday of every month.
“This is the first hike we have had to do as part of the regimental PT in the last three years,” said Hackett.
This hike was advertised at the start of June so that the Marine would have time to prepare.
“Hiking is a tough conditioning exercise that tests both your physical and mental endurance,” said Capt. Chris Nelson, incoming future operational officer, The Basic School.
“Every Marine regardless of rank, age and job title should be able to conduct any hike and still have energy to finish the mission at hand,” said Sgt. Michael Hall, motor vehicle operator, The Basic School.
It is important that every Marine is able to hike because it is always better to be prepared to do something that you don’t have to do then to not be able to do it, said Hall
“Marines will always train the way we fight, because it is in our nature to always strive to be better than we were the day before,” said Hackett.
