FORT BRAGG, N.C. - Soldiers from Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 108th Air Defense Artillery Brigade conducted HMMWV Egress Assistance Training at the HMMWV Egress Assistance Training Center Fort Bragg, NC, June 27.

The HEAT training allows soldiers in the unit to become more conscious of potential accidents while driving an up armored HMMWV and what to do if a vehicle rollover were ever to occur. It also allows soldiers to build confidence and teamwork within the unit and within the brigade.

“This training helps the soldier to be more aware of their surrounding and it also helps them to know what to do in the event of a vehicle rollover,” said Sgt. Michael R. Foley, HEAT training instructor.

The training started with soldiers taking a class that explained how to utilize the trainer and how to stay safe during the training scenario. A group of three to five soldiers entered a simulated HMMWV. They were then rotated to a 30-degree angle on either side to demonstrate the point at which the HMMWV would start to roll. Soldiers were also rotated to a 90-degree angle on either side and finally completely upside down to demonstrate how it would feel at these angles.

After the completion of these exercises, soldiers were then taken through two scenarios: the first of which was a HMMWV rollover landing upside down. Each soldier had to demonstrate his/her ability to get out of the vehicle with all sensitive items. The second was a water rollover, in which the HMMWV lands upside down in a body of water. Soldiers had to again demonstrate their ability to get out of the vehicle with sensitive gear and display teamwork in order to pass this scenario.

“The training went great, overall it is good knowledge to know if something ever were to happen,” said Spc. Curtis D. Osborne, unit public affairs representative.

Through realistic combat training scenarios like HEAT, soldiers and Command of the 108th Air Defense Artillery Brigade will be better prepared when they encounter such events during a deployment or combat operations.
