BEAUFORT, S.C. - Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 31 hosted a family day at the Air Station Bowling Center, June 7.

The unit provided their families with free soda, pizza, bowling and shoe rentals.

Various sections within the squadron were separated by colors to designate teams.

Pink represented families with Marines deployed, blue represented maintenance Marines and their families, yellow represented ordnance, red represented supply and avionics, and grey represented headquarters.

Each team’s score was compiled to give everyone a common goal to work toward and improve camaraderie through competition.

“The most important thing about events like these are getting the families to know each other more and it gives spouses the opportunity to find a support network,” said Evie Plumb, MALS-31 Family Readiness Officer. MALS-31, also known as the Stingers, currently has a detachment deployed in support of Marine All-Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 533 and Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 122.

Marines from the Stingers are also augmented to Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 40 who is currently deployed in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

“Family is truly a congruity of the Marine Corps and anytime you take a moment to step back and say thank you to the families shows appreciation for everything they do,” said Lt. Col. Willie Stansell, MALS-31 commanding officer.

The Stingers provide Fightertown’s squadrons with aviation logistics support, guidance, planning and direction.
Their capabilities also allow squadrons to save funding on maintenance by providing required intermediate maintenance on various aircraft components.

“It’s important to have the encouragement for events like these because it helps increase moral and build camaraderie within the squadron,” said Plumb, a native of Santa Barbara, Calif.

The squadron hosts bowling events for families roughly every three months, and holds bunco nights, lunch-ins, pool parties, and movie nights throughout the year.
