TARIN KOT, Afghanistan – Members of Combined Team Uruzgan displayed their motto of unity and teamwork when they competed in the Tarin Kot Superhero 5K Run at Multinational Base-Tarin Kot, Afghanistan, June 7, 2013.

The superhero-themed event drew 235 male and female competitors wearing inventive costumes from three branches of service. The event was orchestrated with help from all the base commands on MNB-TK, making it clear that the event not only allowed for a bit of fun, but helped build a stronger coalition team.

Provincial Reconstruction Team commander Ron J. Piret was proud of the effort made by his provincial construction team, U.S. Navy Operations Specialist Petty Officer 2nd Class Danielle Ward and Australian Sgt. Debbie Grylls, who led the charge to pull it all together.

“It was wonderful to see representation from the base support commands, which include Provincial Reconstruction Team, Combined Team Uruzgan, Morale Welfare Recreation, and the airfield operations battalion,” said Piret. “These types of events help build camaraderie outside of the normal working relationships, which correlates to a stronger coalition team.”

“The ingenuity on display with some of the inventive costumes certainly made it clear that everyone on the team was enjoying themselves, too,” he said.

At the end of the race, Multinational Base-Tarin Kot Base commander wing Cmdr. Lee de Winton presented prizes to the top finishers and best costumes in both the male and female category.

“As the base commander I was honored and privileged to participate in the event,” said Winton. “I always look forward to seeing these type of events occur because it is a couple hours of fun and competition in a very serious environment.”

The first place male competitor, Air Force Capt. David Ackland, who did the Fun Run to support his friends, agreed that it was a fun competition and relished the opportunity to race against flash.

“Events like these are a great way to break away from the seriousness and enjoy the company of others,” he said. “I thank everyone who had a part is setting up this event; it was a job well done and I look forward to the next event.”
