The Niagara Falls Reserve Station hosted the cycling event for the 27th National Golden Age Games sponsored by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Veterans age 55 and up from all across the country compete in a variety of athletic events throughout the Buffalo Niagara area. The air base was the site for the cycling event with 150 veterans, the oldest being 96.
“Having this event here on the base is great for the vets” said Lt. Col. James Lawson, 914th Security Forces Commander. “The flight line is the right distance and safe for the riders.”
The base opened the flight line for the ¼ mile and ½ mile cycling event. The weather was cool and sunny, with the Air Force C-130 aircraft in the background. While the race is going on the veterans can which the aircraft taxi and fly while waiting their turn to race.
“The games provide the vets to train and look forward to meeting others to build commemoratory,” said Daniel Yawell, Veterans Affairs Recreation Therapists. “The vets like the brotherhood that comes from these events.”
This is the only national, multi-event, sports and recreational seniors’ competition program, designed to improve the quality of life for older Veterans. They come from all parts of the United States to compete. Over 700 Veterans traveled to the Buffalo Niagara area. The National Veterans Golden Age Games encourage VA patients over 55 years old to make physical activity a central part of their lives.
The events include: swimming, cycling, golf, shot-put, discus, 10-meter air rifle, table tennis, dominoes, shuffleboard, horseshoes, nine-ball bowling, checkers and croquet.
