YOKOSUKA, Japan - Fleet Activities, Yokosuka Navy Exchange, Defense Commissary Agency commissary and Morale Welfare and Recreation held their annual customer appreciation weekend at the red brick area outside the main base commissary, May 25-26.

The joint festivities and sales coincide with Memorial Day Weekend and Commissary Awareness Month and are a chance for the on-base retailers to say thank you to the local community for their continued patronage.

“We’ve worked for months planning this. We like to be part of the community. We are here to provide quality goods and services but we want to show that we are not just here selling merchandise and services but that we like to sponsor events like this,” said Dan Cougevan, merchandizing and operations manager for Navy Exchange Japan. “We’ve got a lot of fun things to do and see out here and we’ve got many of our vendors out here.”

Staff and presenters from Sony, Apple and others showed off their newest lines of products while performers entertained the audience on stage. On the second day, the Michael Jackson impersonator’s performance got everyone on their feet. But it was the next and final event that drew the crowd to the stage.

“For at least the last five years, we have given out vouchers for new cars,” said Manny Garza, Yokosuka NEX Car Sales location manager. “This year we are giving out a $10,000 voucher that they can use towards a new car. It’s our way of saying thank you for their service.”

Car Sales personnel had drawn at random nine potential winners before the event but three of those chosen did not show up. Instead of one final person added to the list of contestants, four were chosen at random from a raffle. Included in this group of individuals chosen that day was one contestant who didn’t even know what they were signing up for or why they were being called on stage.

“I just heard that is was a contest and I put my name in,” said Rebecca Johnson, Yokosuka Middle School 6th grade teacher and winner of the voucher. “We picked a key and if it opened the door to the car then we won the voucher. When my key opened the door, all I can say is wow!”

The car voucher closed the customer appreciation weekend but the organizations continue to offer sales and service to the overseas community who don’t always have the option of going to a stateside retail store. For more information on what goods and services are offered check out the agencies online or pick up an issue of the Seahawk newspaper.
