MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, N.C. - The Marine Corps recently released a new order restructuring the process of creating a Family Care Plan.

Marine Corps Order 1740.13C has condensed the plan into a simple, three-page document.

Dual-military couples with dependents, Marines with a dependent spouse, and single Marines with a dependent will be required to complete a care plan.

Ken Lewis, facilitator for the Family Care Plan class aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River, said it is extremely important for service members with dependents to complete their care plans.

“Before we had Family Care Plans we had some very hard situations,” Lewis said. “You have got to have someone to step up in case something happens.”

The plan requires the service member to appoint a primary caregiver and alternate caregiver for their dependent, in case the service member deploys or participates in training that intervenes with their ability to care for the dependent.

“That’s why we need Family Care Plans,” said Lewis. “So we can deploy and do what we are paid to do.”

The new order requires active-duty Marines with dependents to complete a care plan within 60 days of checking into their first duty station, or within 60 days of a change in family status.

Reserve component Marines have 90 days to complete their care plan.

Some of the materials needed for the plan are the service member’s will, finances allotted for the care of the dependent, medical and dental records of the dependent, contact information for the caregivers and an ID card for the dependent.

While it is not required for the plan, Lewis suggests Marines also include a schedule of the dependent’s daily routine and the logistics of getting the dependent to their new primary caregiver.

Service members that need to create a will can visit the legal office aboard the air station at 10 a.m. every Friday.

For those interested in learning more about the specifications of and suggestions for the Family Care Plan, a class will be held at Marine Corps Family Team Building from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., June 27.

For more information or to enroll in the class, contact Ken Lewis at 910-449-4674.
