SONSONATE, El Salvador- U.S. service members participating and supporting the Beyond the Horizon-El Salvador 2013 exercise receive few luxuries in a given day. The work days are long, the weather is hot, and the troops work diligently to accomplish the mission.

At the end of the work day however, Joint Task Force Jaguar service members can relax in various ways; whether it’s playing videos games or surfing the internet, the ultimate goal is to get a taste of home.

“Food, rest and mail are key factors for keeping soldiers happy,” said Staff Sgt. Michael Noel, personnel administrator and mail clerk for Joint Task Force Jaguar, 54th Troop Command N.H..

To deployed service members here in EL Salvador, mail is not about how big the box is, or how long the letter may be; it’s about knowing someone back home is thinking of you.

“It doesn’t matter how bad your day is, or how bad the place where you are stationed or deployed is; a piece of mail will brighten up your day and sometimes your entire week,”
explained Petty Officer 2nd Class Alexis Nicole Fountain, Master at Arms and mail clerk, Navy Outpost San Salvador, El Salvador.

Fountain has seen first hand the joy and excitement the service members feel when receiving mail.

“To just witness that moment, when I hand them that piece of mail and to see the child-within come out through their facial expressions, is something that truly fulfills,” said Fountain. “That’s exactly what I love about this job, it brings happiness to our service members.”

The two-hour drive each way to pick up mail can have its challenges, but with people supporting the mission like Fountain, it sure makes the mission easier.

“I have the sincerest gratitude for Fountain and the Navy for allowing us to occupy some of their space and for helping facilitate taking care of our soldiers,” said Noel. “It truly emphasizes what Joint Task Force Jaguar is.”
