BISMARCK, N.D. - A remembrance ceremony at the "Memorial to the fallen in the global war on terrorism" will honor two additional North Dakotans that were killed in action last December.
* Sgt. 1st Class Darren Linde, 41, Devils Lake, N.D., formerly of Sidney, Mont. Linde is interred at Sidney Cemetery, Sidney, Mont.
* Spc. Tyler John Orgaard, 20, of Bismarck, N.D. Orgaard is interred at N.D. Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, N.D.
Both soldiers were members of the North Dakota National Guard's 818th Engineer Company (Sapper) and died, Dec. 3, 2012, of wounds sustained during combat operations in Lashkar Gah, Helmand province, Afghanistan.
The ceremony will take place at the memorial at 6 p.m., May 22. The memorial is a joint endeavor between the City of Bismarck and the North Dakota National Guard and is located outside the main entrance at Fraine Barracks, Bismarck. It was dedicated on Sept. 11, 2009, and honors North Dakota service members who were killed during global war on terrorism. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved indoors to building 400 at Fraine Barracks.
The 818th Engineers were deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as part of Task Force War Hammer from June 2012 to March 2013. The unit served as combat engineers, clearing routes of improvised explosive devices to protect coalition forces, ensuring safe movement and mission accomplishment.
Connie Sprynczynatyk, civilian aide to the secretary of the Army, will serve as the ceremony's emcee. Keynote speaker is Harriet Goodiron. Distinguished guests rendering remarks include Gov. Jack Dalrymple, Rep. Kevin Cramer, and Maj. Gen. David Sprynczynatyk, North Dakota adjutant general.
The public and media are invited to the ceremony. No media pre-coordination required. Parking is available at the Bank of North Dakota, near the east end of the Liberty Memorial Bridge.
The memorial and its maintenance are funded by private donations through the nonprofit North Dakota National Guard Foundation.
