JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - Marines from Marine Corps Air Station New River participated in Career Day at Parkwood Elementary School to teach students about the many jobs available in the Marine Corps, May 3.

Melissa D. Dedmond, the school’s guidance counselor, said she hoped the Career Day would open up the kids’ eyes to job options in the future.

“A lot of kids just think of the stereotypical jobs,” Dedmond said. “We wanted to broaden their view on what jobs are available to them.”

Marines from Meteorology and Oceanography, Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting, and Air Traffic Control set up displays at the school to teach the students about the different jobs available in the Marine Corps.

One particular hit was ARFF’3s P-19 fire truck display.

“The kids really loved seeing the Marine firefighters,” Dedmond said.

Natalie R. Cotton, a 5th grader who thinks she might someday want to be a firefighter, said that she was excited not only about the Career Day, but also about the Marines coming to her school.

“I think Career Day is a good idea because it gives you job choices and makes you think about your career,” Cotton said. “I think the Marines show a good example to kids.”

The kids weren’t the only people excited to get a chance at participating in Career Day.

“My section leader wanted some motivated guys to come out,” said Lance Cpl. Mike Dupont, ARFF Marine. “I love it, the kids get so excited. I want them to think a Marine is responsible, dedicated and extremely motivated.”

Desmond said that she was very thankful for the military involvement in the Career Day.

“Half of every class has a military affiliation,” she said. “I’m thankful that the Marines were able to come today. The kids really enjoyed it.”
